Normally, heading into February, we’re met with a disappointing line-up of horror movies and romantic comedies. Not in 2016, however, as we’ve got a brilliant collection of sequels, new movies, and remakes, so let’s look at 6 movies to watch this February.
Deadpool – 10 February (UK) / 12 February (USA)
The guys behind Deadpool have played an absolute blinder with the marketing campaign for their new film, getting so many people hyped for an R-rated adaptation of a lesser-known comic book character.
It’s about a guy who gets given superpowers as a result of some freak accident, but that’s not really the point of it. What you need to see Deadpool for is the character’s foul-mouthed and wise-cracking persona. As he says in the trailer, ‘this is a different kind of superhero movie’. Expect laughs, violence and cringeworthy satire on the superhero world when you see Deadpool.

Zoolander 2 – 12 February (UK/USA)
No less than fifteen years ago, we got one of the funniest modern comedies in the shape of Zoolander. Now, after all that time, Ben Stiller is back in the iconic role in Zoolander 2, and he’s got a heap of celebrities and returning cast members to help him.
The premise is basically the same as the first film. The stupid male model and his bumbling friend Hans are the only people who can stop some sort of criminal mastermind by infiltrating the world of high fashion, along with an Interpol agent played by Penélope Cruz. In all honesty, this film could go one of two ways. From the trailers, we know there are a huge amount of celebrity cameos here, from Benedict Cumberbatch to Justin Bieber, and so a likely comparison point is Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues. I loved that, but it was by no means as good as the first film.
So, go and see Zoolander 2 for some good laughs, because they’ll definitely be there, but manage your expectations and don’t think it’ll be as good as the first one.

Dad’s Army – 5 February (UK)/(USA)
Who do you think you’re kidding Mr. Hitler? Yes, there is a Dad’s Army movie on the horizon, and nearly 50 years after the classic comedy show first aired, could this be a TV-to-movie adaptation that actually works?
It’s the story of a team of loveable halfwits working on the Home Guard in Walmington-on-Sea during World War II, and, from the look of the trailers, it looks moderately funny. After its premiere in late January, it didn’t receive the greatest reviews, but it’s always hard to get a TV-to-movie adaptation right, especially with a TV show as classic and beloved as Dad’s Army.
It’ll be a light-hearted and easy-going watch. I don’t think it’ll be the funniest comedy of the year by any means, but whether you’re a fan of the show or not, go and see Dad’s Army for a dose of Great British fun.

Pride And Prejudice And Zombies – 11 February (UK) / 5 February (USA)
This is the one that, oddly, I’m most looking forward to this month. The first trailer for the adaptation of the novel ‘Pride And Prejudice And Zombies’ was brilliant, but the second wasn’t so fantastic, focussing more on the horror aspect of the film than the comedy.
I’ll confess I’ve not read the book, nor do I have any idea of the story, but what I think will make or break this film is what direction it takes. If it’s more of a comedy than a horror, then everyone should be able to have a great time in one of the most surreal movie experiences of the year. However, if they focus too much on the blood and gore without being funny, it’s going to be no different to the generic horror movies that we normally get at this time of year. So, fingers crossed that it’ll be good!

How To Be Single – 19 February (UK) / 12 February (US)
February is the month of Valentine’s Day, so we naturally need a romantic comedy for all the couples to go and watch for no reason. The Fifty Shades Of Grey series is taking a break in 2016 before its final two instalments come in 2017 and 18, so we won’t get a smash box office hit like that, but How To Be Single is the movie that will draw most of its crowd.
With an all-star cast including Fifty Shades star Dakota Johnson and Pitch Perfect actress Rebel Wilson, there’s a lot going for this movie. It’s all about a woman and her friend trying to get the most out of their single days, allegedly the best time of their life, which will undoubtedly lead to them finding some sort of true love along the way. Yes, it’s going to be a generic romantic comedy, but that’s just what people want at this time of year.

The Brothers Grimsby – 24 February (UK) / 11 March (USA)
We haven’t had a Sacha Baron Cohen movie since 2012’s The Dictator (a hiatus which I’ve welcomed wholeheartedly), but he’s back now in the high-budget comedy-crime ‘The Brothers Grimsby’.
It’s about two brothers who were separated at a young age. One became a secret agent, and the other did nothing really. Once reunited, they go on the run together, and inevitably get into all sorts of cringeworthy hijinks along the way.
Sacha Baron Cohen’s characters are notoriously insufferable, and I have to admit that he looks just as bad, if not worse, in The Brothers Grimsby. However, we’ve got to remember that this is the guy who wrote one of the most original comedies of the 2000s, Borat, so if this a well-written enough movie, we’ll hopefully be able to look past his annoying acting. If you’re a fan of his, definitely seek this one out, and if not, do what you like. This might be good, but it’ll most likely be a disappointment.
