Airplane II: The Sequel! is an American film, and is quite obviously the sequel to Airplane!. This time, an evil computer takes control of a shuttle flight to the Moon, forcing the passengers to fly towards the Sun, and their deaths. Surely Ted Striker can save the day, again…
Well, to be honest, I wasn’t expecting much from this film at all, because its predecessor is just so hilarious, there’s no way they could come up with something more original and more entertaining than that masterpiece.
Usually, the main worry I have for comedy sequels is the threat of recycled jokes, and they were very much abundant in this film. Of course, the material that has been completely taken from the first film is still funny, but it’s just a little disappointing to see them not try to go further or lesser with the comedy, and just stay the same.
The new jokes, on the other hand, weren’t as funny. There was the odd one which evoked the spirit of the original, however the majority of them didn’t have that intellectual stupidity, and occasional subtleness that I loved in the previous movie.
The story, as well, wasn’t the greatest. Lots of good movie parodies and everything, but for the most part, it wasn’t as thrilling and nail-biting (sarcasm) as Airplane!, and it had a lot less of a structure, more something that was designed after the jokes, which made it less convincingly funny, and because of that, I’ll give it a 6.8.
